Unisa International Women's Day Serminar

To celebrate International Women’s Day on 8 March, the University of South Africa’s (Unisa’s) Institute for Gender Studies will host a research seminar on African feminist discourse. In keeping with the global theme, #EachforEqual, the seminar will focus on helping women to gain full and equal recognition and to participate in global development.

The following guest speakers will share information on the role they have played in eliminating  discrimination against women and helping to empower women to realise their potential:

Professor Desiree Lewis from the University of the Western Cape’s Department of Women and Gender Studies has been active in developing feminist intellectual activist networks in the country and continent at large. She produces accessible writing on feminism and gender and also mentors new writers.

Ms Zulaikha Patel is a student activist who at the age of 13 became the face of #StopRacismAtPretoriaGirlsHigh movement when she led a protest to challenge her school’s rules on hair. She is the youngest ambassador for the Charlotte Mannya Maxeke Institution and an ambassador for the Thuma Foundation.

 

Ms Sizakele Phohleli is a self-published author and poet. She is also a body positivity activist endorsing the message and knowledge of body love and acceptance, and a well-known storyteller.

 

The seminar will take place as follows:

Date    : 13 March 2020

Time    : 09:00 - 14:00

Venue  : Function Hall, 4th floor, Kgorong Building, Muckleneuk Campus, Pretoria
