Rwanda has assumed the rotating monthly chairmanship of the Peace and Security Council (PSC) of the African Union (AU) for the month of May, the New Times has reported.

Rwanda’s Permanent Representative to the AU, Hope Gasatura, will be presiding over the PSC sessions during the month.

The PSC is the AU organ for the prevention, management and resolution of conflicts, invested with the powers for intervening in regard to issues affecting peace, security and stability in any AU member state and can enforce AU decisions.

During Kigali’s chairmanship, the PSC is to discuss the peace process in the Central African Republic (CAR) and propose measures to reinforce the implementation of the Peace Agreement signed two months ago in Khartoum.

The AU Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) is also expected to be renewed when it expires at the end of May.

The threat of epidemics like Ebola and cyber related security threats will also be discussed.
