Libyan rebel chief Khalifa Haftar has said he is ready to sign a United Nations (UN) deal to bring peace to the North African nation of Libya on condition that the internationally recognised unity government and its supporters also accept it, africannews.com reports.

Haftar was speaking to French president Emmanuel Macron during a meeting in Paris on Monday africannews.com said.

Haftar said that the agreement would cease if armed groups that supported the internationally recognised government of unity failed to respect it.

According to africanenews.com, discussions between the two men also focused on oil affected by the port blockade, that has nearly halved Libya’s oil output.

The French presidency says they support efforts taken by the UN to restore calm to the region, and encourage a ceasefire as well an inter-Libyan dialogue which is currently deadlocked, to bring much needed stability to the region.

Since 4 April 2019, Khalifa Haftars forces have been conducting the offensive in an attempt to take Tripoli, the seat of the National Unity government.
