Minister for the Public Service and Administration, Mr Senzo Mchunu will, on Tuesday, 23 June 2020, lead the Government celebration of the Africa Public Service Day (APSD) which will be hosted in the City of Tshwane with online connection in observance of the Alert Level 3 Regulations on the nation-wide lockdown.

This year’s APSD will be celebrated under the theme, “The role of Public Administration in Building and Sustaining peaceful co-existence among communities.”  The Pan-African Ministers’ agreed that the 23rd June of every year should be celebrated as APSD through annual national and biennial continental events as part of the continental strategy to boost public administration programmes, public sector performance and governance as well as recognise the value and virtue of service to the community.

The APSD is driven within the Agenda 2063 which is Africa’s blueprint and master plan for transforming Africa into the global powerhouse of the future. It is the continent’s strategic framework that aims to deliver on its goal for inclusive and sustainable development and is a concrete manifestation of the Pan-African drive for unity, self-determination, freedom, progress and collective prosperity pursued under Pan-Africanism and African Renaissance.

The APSD is celebrated by African Union member countries every year to recognise the institutional contribution made by public servants to enhance the role, professionalism, image and visibility of the public service, and to recognise the value and virtue of public service to the community.

The APSD is one of the strategic platforms that enable public servants in Africa to reflect on the function of the public service. The reflections include deliberations on the public service’s mission, objectives, programmes and projects, challenges, successes and excellence in governance. The above include the human resource functioning aspect of the public sector through a recognition and rewarding of performance; emphasis on motivation, professionalism, image, the trust deficit, ethics and the sharing of best practice across and amongst member states.

Minister for the Public Service and Administration is the custodian of the APSD in South Africa, thereby coordinating the national celebrations and participation in collaboration with the national, provincial, local public service and administration stakeholders across the three spheres of government.

Noting the declared nation-wide lockdown Regulations, the Minister for the Public Service and Administration with regards to the celebration of the APSD through a virtual plenary session (webinar) with comprehensive media coverage, to be held on 23 June 2020 to reflect and discuss issues and trends related to innovation.
