Delivery of Justice – Independence And Accountability Of The Judiciary

4th February 2020

On 4 December 2019, the Helen Suzman Foundation, in association with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation, hosted a roundtable on the independence and accountability of the judiciary, held in Cape Town.

The report sets out the comprehensive discussions held by panelists Professor Tania Ajam, Advocate Susannah Cowen SC and Supreme Court of Appeal Judge Cachalia on the independence of the judiciary.

The report explores the effectiveness and efficiency of the Judicial Service Commission ("JSC") in its appointment of judges, as well as its disciplinary function. We feel that the publication of this report is particularly relevant given current developments in the Western Cape High Court and other courts.
