US representative arrives in for Ramaphosa’s inauguration

The president of the Export-Import Bank of the United States, Kimberly Reed, who is representing President Donald Trump arrived at Lanseria International Airport on Friday.

Reed is in South Africa to attend Saturday's inauguration of Cyril Ramaphosa as president of the republic of South Africa.

As many as 40 heads of state are expected to attend the ceremony at the Loftus Stadium in Pretoria. The stadium has a seating capacity of 51 762.

It has also been reported that Prince Mthunzi Ngonyama will be representing abaThembu King Buyelekhaya Dalindyebo at the inauguration.

 

Theresa May announces resignation

Theresa May will resign as British Prime Minister on June 7.

Speaking in front of 10 Downing Street, May said she had done everything she could to convince MPs to back her deal for Brexit, but without success.

She said it was a matter of "deep regret" that she could not deliver Brexit.

An election to choose her replacement will begin on June 10.

 

State pours cold water on ‘political meddling’ mystery letter in Zuma graft case

The National Prosecuting Authority on Friday dismissed as irrelevant a letter purporting to bolster an argument for political meddling in the graft case of former South African president Jacob Zuma and his co-accused, French arms company Thales.

Late on Thursday afternoon, Zuma’s defence team tried to bring the letter before the court as evidence that political interference was indeed central to the fraud, corruption and racketeering charges being faced by Zuma.

Zuma has maintained since he was first charged over a decade ago that the state sought to prosecute him to keep him from becoming ANC president and consequently state president.
