ANC names its premier candidates for provinces

The ANC has released its list of premier candidates for seven of the eight provinces where it won the 8 May elections, after a special National Executive Council meeting on Monday at Saint George Hotel in Irene, in Gauteng.

The ruling party's secretary-general Ace Magashule said that concern for gender parity, unity and stability guided the NEC when it made its decision.

Out of the three names that the NEC received from each of the eight provinces, the following were nominated: Eastern Cape – Oscar Mabuyane, Free State – Sisisi Ntombela, Gauteng – David Makhura, KwaZulu-Natal – Sihle Zikalala, Limpopo – Stan Mathabathe, Mpumalanga – Refilwe Mtsweni and Northern Cape - Zamani Saul.

Magashule said the North West premier candidate would be announced “in due course following internal engagements”.

Maimane to remain DA leader until federal congress in 2021 party announces in his absence

The DA has publicly quelled rumours that party leader Mmusi Maimane was in its crosshairs after a disappointing showing at the polls.

Maimane is to remain leader of the party until its federal congress in 2021, DA federal deputy chairperson Athol Trollip announced on Monday.

This comes after a Federal Executive meeting post-elections as well as much speculation around Maimane's future after the DA lost support nationally and in some provinces in the May 8 elections.

Durban mayor Zandile Gumede to appear in court on graft charges

eThekwini Metro mayor Zandile Gumede will be appearing in the Durban Commercial Crimes Court today on charges that include fraud, corruption and racketeering.

It is reported that the charges referred against Gumede relate to a dodgy R208-million tender within the Durban Solid Waste department.

Earlier this month, nine people were arrested - including DSW deputy head, Robert Abbu and the city's supply chain manager, Sandile Ngcobo - for fraud relating to the same tender.

Gumede has been granted R50 000 bail.
