One-hundred days after the first case of Covid-19, 1 674 South Africans have succumbed to the disease.

President Cyril Ramaphosa said since the start of the outbreak there have been 80 412 confirmed coronavirus cases in South Africa.

Of these, 44 331 people have recovered while there are currently 34 407 active cases in the country.

While the president has commended South Africans broadly for their adherence to stringent regulations during a difficult period, he has cautioned that the worst is yet to come.

Treasury gives the green light for Human Settlements Development Bank

The operating business model of the Human Settlements Development Bank has been completed and approved by National Treasury.

Human Settlements, Water and Sanitation Minister Lindiwe Sisulu confirmed in response to a parliamentary question posed by Democratic Alliance MP Mimmy Gondwe that the process to establish the bank is proceeding.

Sisulu said the consolidation of National Urban Reconstruction and Housing Agency and the Rural Housing Loan Fund into the National Housing Finance Corporation was finalised in October 2018.

DA will continue personal care court case

South Africa’s main opposition party the DA says while it welcomes President Cyril Ramaphosa’s announcement that the personal care industry will be reopened under Level 3 of the national lockdown, it will continue with its pending case until the regulations are published.

DA Shadow Minister of Trade and Industry Dean Macpherson accused the President of buckling under the pressure as a result of the DA’s pending court case against Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma on June 22.

Dlamini-Zuma is expected to file her responding affidavit to the court by Thursday.
