South Africa's electoral body ready to help parliament revise electoral act,

The Electoral Commission of South Africa has said it was ready to assist parliament with revising the country’s electoral system and legislation.

This follows a landmark constitutional court judgment that now allows independent candidates to contest provincial and national polls. 

Commission chairperson, Glen Mashinini said the electoral commission welcomes the clarity the court has provided to the interpretation of the rights of citizens to stand for public office.

The court has given parliament 24 months to revise the legislation.

Cabinet to mull enhanced alert level 3 recommendations next week

Cabinet has received recommendations relating to alert level 3 of South Africa's lockdown and will decide on these next week after a briefing by ministerial health advisers on the coronavirus pandemic.

The NCCC tabled a number of recommendations pertaining to the enhanced risk-adjusted alert level 3 of the national lockdown.

The recommendations are based on input from various quarters as well as deliberations by the National Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure.

The structure groups the police, military and intelligence structures and has played a key role in the government's coronavirus strategy.

Burundi cabinet meets on way forward after president's death

Burundi convened an emergency cabinet meeting to discuss a way forward after the sudden death of President Pierre Nkurunziza, who took office following a bloody civil war in 2005. 

Nkurunziza, who died on Monday aged 55, had been due to step down in August after his surprise decision not to run in an election last month won by the ruling party's handpicked successor.

Nkurunziza died of a heart attack after feeling unwell for two days.
