Gauteng not looking at hard lockdown

The Gauteng government says it's ready to deal with the expected increase in coronavirus cases and it has not asked the national government to enforce a hard lockdown in the province.

It is, however, asking for stricter measures to be considered, including limited hours for the sale of alcohol and the prohibition of unnecessary social gatherings.

Premier David Makhura's cabinet met over the weekend to discuss its approach to Covid-19.

Gauteng's infection rate soared to 63 404 positive cases on Sunday.

Ramaphosa calls for caution around elderly during Covid-19

President Cyril Ramaphosa has called for vigilance and cautiousness as the country prepares to reach its peak of coronavirus infections, and has placed emphasis on ensuring that the elderly are not exposed to the virus.

Ramaphosa said as part of the national effort to contain Covid-19, protecting the general population from becoming infected must be matched by efforts to protect people who are at greater risk.

To date South Africa has recorded 196 750 cases of Covid-19 with 3 199 deaths.

Kenya announces phased re-opening of the country from lockdown

Kenya's President Uhuru Kenyatta announced on Monday a phased re-opening of the country from a lockdown imposed to curb the spread of the coronavirus, lifting restrictions in and out of the capital Nairobi and the coastal city of Mombasa.

Kenyatta extended the current nationwide nightly curfew between 9 pm and 4 am for a further 30 days.

He said that international commercial travel would resume from August 1, while domestic flights are scheduled to restart on July 15.
