The National and Provincial waste management strategy is geared towards waste beneficiation and diversion from landfill. The reality in Gauteng that remains is that the vast majority of waste generated is sent to landfill. Landfill as a waste management option seems to still be a necessary reality, at least for the immediate future, as plans for waste diversion from landfill and recycling initiatives are gathering momentum in Gauteng. The requirement for airspace is consequently something that needs attention.
