The Thabo Mbeki Foundation in partnership with the University of South Africa (UNISA) wishes to invite members of the Media fraternity to the 9th Thabo Mbeki Africa Day Lecture. This year’s lecture will be delivered by Dr Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka. Dr Mlambo-Ngcuka is United Nations Under-Secretary-General and Executive Director of UN Women. She has had an illustrious career here in South Africa and is internationally recognised for her passion and activism in promoting issues of gender equality and the fair and equitable treatment of women in all spheres of social, political and economic endeavour. She holds the firm view that there can be no sustainable development and the improvement of the quality of life which excludes women.

Dr. Mlambo-Ngcuka has worked in government and civil society, and with the private sector, and was actively involved in the struggle to end apartheid in her home country of South Africa.

She was a Member of Parliament from 1994 to 1996 as part of South Africa’s first democratic government. She holds a doctorate in education and technology from the University of Warwick, UK.

After the lecture, Mrs Mlambo-Ngcuka will be joined in a Panel Discussion by Dr Jessie Kabwila, a Malawian Member of Parliament and Professor Kopano Rapele.

Professor Rapele’s research focus is on men and masculinity as it interacts with violence, class, traditions, sexuality and race. Ms Lerato Mbele, will facilitate the discussion.

The Lecture will take place as follow:
