The board of public interest law centre SECTION27 on Tuesday announced the appointment of Umunyana Rugege as its new executive director, effective January 1, 2019.

Rugege is a legal practitioner and has been with SECTION27 since its inception in 2010.

She is currently the deputy director at the organisation and will replace Mark Heywood, who is stepping down in December.

Section27 praised Heywood for building an organisation that is a prominent civil society voice in South Africa in the fight for social justice.

The organisation added that Rugege’s appointment demonstrated its commitment to helping to build a new generation of human rights leaders.

“She has played a leading role in a number of cases including the ex-mineworkers’ Silicosis class action in which SECTION27 represented TAC and Sonke Gender Justice as a friend of the court; the Competition Commission’s Health Market Inquiry where she made representations to the panel on behalf of patient groups at the public hearings and the Life Esidimeni matter,” said SECTION27.

Rugege will be supported by the executive committee, which includes head of education Dr Faranaaz Veriava, head of health Sasha Stevenson, head of finance Kuda Chimone, head of fundraising Elinor Kern, head of communications Ntsiki Mpulo and head of human resources and administration Violet Kaseke-Palmer.

She will also be backed by additional staff members made up of activists, researchers, lawyers, communications experts and others committed to social justice.

Rugege holds a BA in Environmental Studies (magna cum laude) from the State University of New York at Buffalo, a Master of Professional Studies (MPS) from Cornell University, and an LLB from the University of Cape Town as well as having clerked at the International Criminal Court in The Hague. As an admitted attorney in South Africa, she has more than ten years of post-qualification experience in the legal profession.
