The national office bearers of the South African Public Service Union (Sapsu) held a media briefing on Wednesday in Johannesburg to express their dissatisfaction with recent developments in South Africa.

Among the union’s concerns were the grave implications of the recent Constitutional Court judgment on the school admission regulations, the torching of schools in Vuwani in Limpopo, the decision of the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA)_to appeal the High Court ruling on corruption charges against President Jacob Zuma and the recently released report of the Department of Basic Education (DBE) on Jobs for Cash.

Former South African Democratic Teachers Union (Sadtu) president and current Sapsu president Thobile Ntola said the union was calling on President Jacob Zuma to step down and added that the President should not be the only one to step down.

On the ongoing lack of access to tertiary education, Sapsu said whereas the government and some academics argue that society must understand merit as a quality of being particularly good or worthy, the union remains of the view that merit goes beyond narrow understanding to include the reality of class determination and/or limitations within a continuing struggle to transform society.

Sapsu said it was concerned by the high level of unemployment in the country. It said unemployment was causing serious economic exclusions which led to deprivation on the part of working class communities.

It expressed its concern at the horrendous effects of outsourcing with the continuous growth in the number of foreign nationals brought into South Africa to take up jobs on low income.

On the recent High Court judgment to set aside the decision by former acting national director of public prosecutions Mokotedi Mpshe to withdraw corruption charges against President Zuma in 2009 the union said the NPA should stop wasting tax payers money by appealing this decision.

Sapsu said Zuma should have his day in court and prove that the allegations against him are untrue.

Sapsu first deputy general Paul Mbhele said the union was making a call on Chapter 9 institutions to investigate the matter of the selling of posts which was revealed in the Jobs for Cash report recently released by the DBE.

The union said they supported the Ministerial task team’s view and recommendation that the illegal action by educators identified by the investigating team be reported to the South African Police Service.

It further said Sapsu considered the matter with due urgency hence it would take initiatives to make submissions to the Hawks, the Human Rights Commission, the Public Protector and all relevant institutions with the view to ensure no shenanigans could prevail as in the Nkandla debacle.

“We are going to be taking a variety of documentation to them on different corruption issues,” said Ntola.

He said no one was investigating him as the former President of Sadtu. “I am a very clean person but if they wish to investigate me I am available,” he said.
