The national and provincial governments have finally succumbed to the Democratic Alliance’s (DA) pressure to initiate the process of gazetting for the switching off of the e-toll gantries.

According to media reports, the Minister of Transport, Sindisiwe Chikunga, has confirmed that switching off the e-tolls will be gazetted as of today for 14 days and thereafter switched off.

Unnecessary delays in gazetting the switching of the e-tolls will result in Premier Panyaza Lesufi missing the promised deadline of March 31 March 2024.

The DA is proud to have contributed to securing this victory for the residents of Gauteng who have been held at ransom by this poorly thought-out system imposed upon them.

We will continue to monitor the situation to ensure that national and provincial governments do not renege on their commitment to gazette and completely scrap the tolling system in 14 days.

Furthermore, we want to know the progress with regard to sourcing funds to pay for Gauteng’s e-toll debt portion. The DA reiterates its position that we will fight against any option that intends to add financial burden to our residents.
