Ramaphosa says SA to reallocate R50-billion of budget to revive economy

President Cyril Ramaphosa announced today a raft of policy reform plans, including re-prioritising R50-billion of public spending to boost economic growth and create jobs.

South Africa’s economy entered a recession in the second quarter for the first time since 2009, in a blow to Ramaphosa's pledge to turnaround the economy after a decade of stagnation.

He said the central element of the economic stimulus and recovery plan is the re-prioritisation of spending towards activities than have the greatest economic effect.

Ramaphosa also said government would launch a R400-billion infrastructure fund.

Moerane Commission report reveals government failures and greed

Nearly two years after KwaZulu-Natal Premier Willies Mchunu established the Moerane Commission to investigate political killings, the finalised report pointed to several government failures, provincial politics and ultimately, material greed.

While not providing too much detail, Mchunu was adamant that his government would move swiftly to implement recommendations.

Among the key recommendations put forth by commissioners and advocates Marumo Moerane, Vasu Gounden, and Professor Cheryl Potgieter, were an improvement in internal structures in SA politics, the exploitation of the tender system, depoliticising public services, political deployments in the government sector, police manipulation of the system and criminal acts of politicians

Hlaudi Motsoeneng loses CCMA case against the SABC

Former SABC chief operating officer Hlaudi Motsoeneng has lost his bid to get his job back at the Commission for Conciliation, Mediation and Arbitration.

Motsoeneng wanted to be reinstated as group executive for corporate affairs.

He was dismissed in 2017 after he was found to have brought the public broadcaster into disrepute during a media conference he called to discuss the introduction of the infamous 90% local music quota to the broadcaster.

The SABC has welcomed the CCMA's decision.
