South Africa committed to protecting property rights, says Ramaphosa

President Cyril Ramaphosa used the investment summit on Friday to reassure investors that his government was committed to protecting property rights as it pursues plans to accelerate the pace of land redistribution.

He said government was committed to pursuing a comprehensive approach to land and agrarian reform which ensures transformation, development and stability.

He said government’s approach reaffirmed the constitutional protection of property rights.

The Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa is ready to roll out electronic voting, but South Africa's political parties are against it and prefer the paper ballot.

Speaking at a panel discussion on elections in the age of misinformation and fake news, IEC deputy CEO Nomsa Masuku said there was no political will in the country to embrace the digital era when it comes to voting.

Masuku said voting electronically would do away with having to safeguard ballot paper boxes and ensure quick turnaround on election results.

The country is expected to hold the general elections next year before May.

The culpable homicide case against former president Jacob Zuma's son Duduzane Zuma has been postponed to January 24 at the Randburg Magistrate's Court.

He is facing charges of culpable homicide relating to an accident in February 2014, when he crashed into a taxi after losing control of his Porsche on the Grayston Drive off-ramp on the M1 north of Johannesburg.

The incident resulted in one fatality and three injuries. Zuma has denied any wrongdoing in the charges against him.
