DA-led coalition's woes continue in Nelson Mandela Bay

The balance of power in Nelson Mandela Bay was put to the test yesterday when two former coalition members, the United Democratic Movement's  Mongameli Bobani and the Patriotic Alliance's Marlon Daniels, voted against the DA-led coalition in council in a vote around 2017's international Ironman competition in the city.

The council meeting was originally scheduled to take place on September 21, but the coalition failed to make quorum, which is 61 out of the total 120 councillors, after parties, including the UDM, decided to stay away.

Today, a small group of protesters gathered outside the council chambers, calling for Mayor Athol Trollip to be removed.

Save SA's Pityana sceptical about ANC's ability to self-correct

The ANC will probably reproduce "varying shades of the same leadership that has plunged the organisation into its worst crisis in its history" at its upcoming elective conference, warned Save South Africa convenor Sipho Pityana.

Delivering the Bram Fischer Memorial Lecture at Oxford University in the United Kingdom, Pityana expressed his scepticism that the ANC had the ability to "self-correct.

According to Pityana, many see the December conference as the final throw of the dice for the ANC, "and for the progressive, democratic vision that inspired so many".

ANC threatened to put City of Cape Town on review for water crisis

The Western Cape ANC says it intends calling for the provincial government and City of Cape Town to be placed under administration for their dismal handling of the ongoing water crisis.

ANC provincial leader Khaya Magaxa said yesterday that they would approach the national government if the DA-led administration failed to heed to their demands.
Their demands are "water-shedding" timetables to be released to the public; the finalisation of a plan to tackle the water crisis and deadlines to be released for augmentation schemes.
