Zim war veterans ask High Court to validate 'army intervention'

Zimbabwe's war veterans have reportedly approached the High Court seeking an order declaring the intervention by the defence forces as a lawful and justified action meant to defend constitutionalism.

According to the state-owned Herald newspaper, the war veterans said that the Zimbabwe Defence Forces realised that President Robert Mugabe had been captured by his wife Grace and her Generation 40 gang.

The war veterans said this was "to an extent that Mugabe was no longer able to exercise his functions [and it was then that the ZDF moved] in to protect the nation by weeding out the criminal elements that had positioned themselves around the head of State".

'Zuma tried to seduce Nxasana with public money',

President Jacob Zuma tried to "bully" former National Director of Public Prosecutions Mxolisi Nxasana out of office by using an inquiry into his fitness, the North Gauteng High Court in Pretoria heard yesterday.

Freedom Under Law, Corruption Watch and the Council for the Advancement of the South African Constitution are seeking an order declaring Nxasana’s removal invalid.

Nxasana accepted a golden handshake from Zuma worth R17.3-million and left the National Prosecuting Authority in 2015.

Scopa to be briefed on Sassa saga

The South African Social Security Agency is expected back in the spotlight today over its compliance on the phasing out of Cash Paymaster Services.

A joint meeting of the Standing Committee on Public Accounts and the portfolio committee on social development is to be briefed by the inter-ministerial committee on the procurement of alternative payment services.

Cabinet's IMC on social security had to step in to "resolve" a deadlock between Sassa and the South African Post Office after the agency failed to sign an inter-government agreement, following months of negotiations.

Also making headlines:

ANC chief whip Jackson Mthembu said the ANC should get President Jacob Zuma to stand down as head of state after a party conference next month because, like Zimbabwe, the country urgently needed a change of leader.
