State capture inquiry resumes with Barbara Hogan testifying

The hearings of the Judicial Commission of Inquiry into State Capture has reconvened in Johannesburg today.

The hearing resumed with testimony from the former minister of public enterprises, Barbara Hogan.

The commission is chaired by Deputy Chief Justice Raymond Zondo and is tasked with examining allegations of corruption and fraud in the public sector and organs of state.

On Thursday, it will be the long-awaited turn of the current Minister of Public Enterprises, Pravin Gordan to testify.

SAA welcomes government’s support

South African Airways has assured its stakeholders, customers and suppliers of its business continuity after government confirmed that the airline will not be shut down or sold.

Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan last week clarified government’s position that, while the airline would continue to operate, there was heightened expectation for SAA to execute on its strategy to restore the airline financially and operationally, with more commitment and a greater sense of urgency.

Gordhan said the public was losing patience with SAA and urged the airline to work with government to turn into a profitable business again.

Eskom warns of power cuts due to low coal stockpiles

Cash-strapped power utility Eskom has said the risk of nation-wide electricity outages has increased significantly due to a sharp fall in coal stockpiles at five of its power stations.

Eskom spokesperson Khulu Phasiwe said there is a risk of load-shedding and added that it is rising.

Eskom has 11 coal-fired power stations that have less than the required minimum amount of 20 days stockpile. Out of the 11, five of them have less than ten days of coal stock.
