Transnet veteran Morwe steps in as acting CEO for next six months

Freight logistics group Transnet has appointed Tau Morwe as acting CEO for the six-month period from November 1, 2018, to April 30, 2019.

The appointment has been approved by Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan and follows on from the State-owned company’s decision to dismiss Siyabonga Gama in October.

Gama had failed to meet the board’s deadline for the submission of reasons as to why his contract should not be terminated.

Morwe, who also joins the Transnet board, is a veteran of the organisation, having first been employed by Transnet in 1997.

He worked for the group for 17 years, during which time he headed three divisions, including the Transnet National Ports Authority, Transnet Freight Rail and Transnet Port Terminals.

Ramaphosa to brief SA on government’s efforts to revitalise economy

President Cyril Ramaphosa is today expected to brief the nation on the government’s efforts to revitalise the economy, the fight against crime as well as South Africa’s objectives for its forthcoming term on the United Nations Security Council.

The Presidency said in a statement that the updates form part of President Ramaphosa’s reply to questions in the National Assembly.

Ramaphosa’s spokesperson Khusela Diko said the president will answer questions on the revitalisation of the economy through the partnerships that South Africa has entered into with the People’s Republic of China.

Public enterprises committee chair says there is no political campaign against Gigaba

The Portfolio Committee on Public Enterprises has rejected claims by Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba that its members are part of a political campaign to discredit him.

On the side-lines of a walkabout through the Lindela repatriation centre today, Gigaba told reporters that the committee had now joined a "well-orchestrated political campaign" against him.

On Monday, Business Day reported that Gigaba and former public enterprises minister Lynne Brown were implicated in a report into state capture at Eskom, compiled by the committee.
