NFP to initiate motion in National Assembly to downgrade SA embassy in Israel

Following the killing of at least 60 Palestinians by Israeli armed forces stationed at the Gaza border, the NFP has announced its intention to submit a resolution to the National Assembly to downgrade South Africa's embassy in Israel.

In a statement, NFP MP Ahmed Munzoor Shaik Emam said the "endless barbaric acts of terrorism perpetuated against the Palestinians by the apartheid Israel regime, the mass murder of innocent Palestinians including women and children are done with absolute impunity".

He said that the issuing of press statements, recalls or withdrawals of an ambassador were temporary measures and not decisive enough considering that people were being killed and international law was being ignored.

Zikalala says ANC KZN conference won’t be held just for the sake of it

Even though most ANC regions in KwaZulu-Natal had held smooth conferences, the party's provincial coordinator Sihle Zikalala admits the province is not ready to hold its conference just yet.

The provincial task team coordinator said KZN, which is home to the ANC’s largest membership, would take a break from regional conferences over the weekend to mourn their recently fallen comrades.

The party has been rocked by the assassinations of some of its members in the province, with President Cyril Ramaphosa declaring that political killings in KZN were a matter of national concern.

Pandor says free higher education is an opportunity for change and empowerment

Fully subsidised bursaries for students from poor and working-class backgrounds present an opportunity for all South African universities and colleges to be at the forefront of change and empowerment, Higher Education and Training Minister Naledi Pandor said yesterday as she introduced her department's budget to Parliament.

She said the universities and technical vocational education and training colleges can ensure that South Africa overcome the legacy of the past and create a much more equal, empowered and productive society in the future.

Pandor added that the 2018 budget marked the beginning of a 'new dawn' for post-school education and training.

Also making headlines:

Minister for Women in the Presidency Bathabile Dlamini has gone on the offensive, labelling the media an agent of patriarchy for participating in the "destruction" of women.
