Gordhan says 'Stage 4 load-shedding is unacceptable and disruptive to the economy

Minister of Public Enterprises Pravin Gordhan has said that his department and National Treasury will assist embattled power utility Eskom to fast-track the procurement of "essential goods and services" required to urgently repair generating units at local stations.

South Africans suffered two days of load-shedding over the weekend.

Power giant Eskom has said Stage 4 load-shedding will be implemented today as it battles generation constraints.

In a statement, yesterday evening Gordhan said "greater urgency was needed to be applied to acquire equipment necessary for urgent maintenance".

The Gauteng ANC welcomes a decision to terminate Bosasa contracts with provincial government

The ANC in Gauteng has welcomed the termination of Bosasa contracts with provincial government.

This intention was announced by Premier David Makhura after the company, now known as African Global Operations, was implicated in alleged State capture.

ANC Gauteng spokesperson Tasneem Motara said the decision was in keeping with the party’s commitment to the people of Gauteng and South Africa, in its election manifesto, to 'put an end to State capture, restore the integrity of public institutions and tackle corruption, while ensuring that government has the capacity, resources and people to serve citizens effectively'.

Ramaphosa deploys SANDF to Mozambique as cyclone affects SA power supply

President Cyril Ramaphosa says he has deployed the South African National Defence Force to Mozambique to assist with recovery efforts after Cyclone Idai caused severe damage, knocking down pylons and affecting power supply to Eskom.

It has been reported that the storm damaged a Mozambican transmission line to South Africa, cutting supplies by 900 MW and worsening the already strained electricity supply in South Africa.

Ramaphosa has apologized to South Africans for the crisis, which has led to an increase in load-shedding during a campaign trail in the North West yesterday.

He added that he was certain that the crisis would be attended to within the next two to three days because the Defence Force was also assisting Eskom with the pylons.
