De Lille back in court to challenge Steenhuisen report

Patricia De Lille's court battles have not yet come to an end as she gears up for the review of the internal report into her conduct authored by DA chief whip John Steenhuisen in the Western Cape High Court today.

Yesterday, the High Court set aside the DA's decision to terminate her party membership over comments she made during a radio interview.

A full Bench determined that the party's decision to expel De Lille from the DA was unlawful and it was set aside with costs.

The Cape Town mayor now plans on challenging the findings of the Steenhuisen report, which informed the DA's decision to sanction her for her alleged misconduct.

UDM calls on Ramaphosa to tackle 'iceberg of corruption' at PIC

The United Democratic Movement has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to address what it calls an "iceberg of corruption" at the Public Investment Corporation, claiming it has uncovered the involvement of several individuals and companies in the pillaging of the institution.

The PIC is a State-owned company tasked with managing nearly R2-trillion in assets, more than 98% of which belongs to the government or its employees.

The PIC and its chief executive, Dan Matjila, have been wracked by allegations of impropriety in recent weeks.

With more than 87% of its assets belonging to the GEPF, government employees' retirement funds will bear the brunt of any losses made by the PIC.

Local celebs pledge to give up plastic bags

More than 30 local celebrities and influencers will pledge to give up plastic shopping bags in July, backing the Rethink the Bag campaign's latest initiative.

The Plastic-free July campaign kicked off at the Two Oceans Aquarium on Tuesday evening with big names such as Jack Parow and Roxy Louw in attendance.

Aaniyah Omardien, founder of NPO the Beach Co-op said they are spreading the message for people to try and reduce the amount of single-use plastic that they use – and in this case, the shopping bag in particular.

According to Omardien, plastic bags are part of the so-called "dirty dozen" twelve items that are most commonly found on beach clean-ups.
