A group of Umkhonto weSizwe military veterans’ association members on Monday stormed the offices of the provincial African National Congress headquarters in Durban, in KwaZulu-Natal.

The incident comes as the ANC and state president, Cyril Ramaphosa, is in the province prior to the governing party’s January 8 birthday celebrations.

Commenting on the incident, MKMVA provincial head in KZN, Themba Mavundla, said he had been made aware of the storming of the provincial ANC offices. He said it appeared that the members involved were from the eThekwini MKMVA branch.

ANC KZN spokesperson Nomagugu Simelane-Zulu could not be reached for comment at the time of publication, nor could the South African Police Services.

ANC engages with KZN communities in run up to its 107th anniversary celebrations

The ANC kicks off its 107th anniversary celebrations today with members of the national executive committee engaging with various communities in 11 regions of KwaZulu-Natal.

Party president Cyril Ramaphosa will be in the lower South Coast region where he will conduct door-to-door engagements at the Masinenge informal settlement and Merlewood, Ward 17.

Meanwhile, deputy president David Mabuza will be in the Emalahleni region where he will conduct a walkabout at the KwaMdakane taxi rank and door-to-door engagements at the Lembede branch and Phakamani branch in Newcastle.

The party will officially launch its election manifesto during its annual January 8 statement celebration, which will be held at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on Saturday, January 12.

SACP will not contest elections outside of the tripartite alliance

The South African Communist Party said that it will be supporting the ANC to win the coming elections, on condition that the ANC runs a pro-poor agenda.

The SACP said that it was pleased so far with efforts by the ANC to try re-build itself, but cautioned it that those efforts should also be placed to reconfiguring the tripartite alliance.

This in contrast to the party's resolutions at its national congress in July 2017, where it was resolved that it will be contesting elections alone, away from the alliance.
