Eskom says 'high risk' of Stage 1 load-shedding for Thursday
Power-utility Eskom has announced an increased risk of Stage 1 load-shedding until 22:00 today.
The load-shedding is due to a shortage in generation capacity and risk remains high today and Friday and will continue over the weekend as there is a need to "replenish emergency reserves", Eskom said.
The power utility said while the risk remains high, load-shedding will only be implemented if necessary.
MPs agree McBride contract should not be renewed
MPs have adopted a report recommending that the contract of police watchdog boss Robert McBride not be renewed for a further five years.
At a meeting of Parliament's police portfolio committee on Thursday, MPs effectively confirmed a decision by Police Minister Bheki Cele that McBride be replaced.
The committee's reasons for not supporting a renewal of McBride's contract included a "breakdown of trust" between him and the minister, allegations of misconduct against Ipid members being investigated by the public protector, and the fact that McBride has no security clearance.
Trevor Manuel says Zuma "exploded Cabinet”
Former Cabinet minister Trevor Manuel told the Zondo Inquiry that the expansion of the executive by former president Jacob Zuma had "exploded Cabinet".
Manuel said that there were significant changes in how Cabinet appointments were made in October 2010 during one of Zuma's largest reshuffles which resulted in 10 ministerial changes while seven ministers were fired.
He cited how Zuma's splitting of certain ministries into two and creating new ones had bloated government, and how the appointment of Bathabile Dlamini and Malusi Gigaba to Cabinet had changed the norms of the executive.
