BLF threatens to take up arms if IEC deregisters the party over alleged hate speech
Black First Land First president Andile Mngxitama has threatened an "arm struggle" should the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa deregister his party over his alleged hate speech.
He said that comments he made over the weekend in the North West encouraging his supporters to kill white people were merely a defence against recent statements made by billionaire Johann Rupert, which he interpreted as an "incitement to violence" against black people.
Mngxitama said that he would be laying charges of inciting violence against Rupert.
In a recent interview with Power FM's Given Mkhari, Rupert warned that he had "friends in the taxi industry" who he referred to as his "own army".
Communications committee invites nominations to fill SABC board amid turmoil
Amid the turmoil of resignations from the SABC board, the Portfolio Committee on Communications is asking for nominations to fill eight vacant posts.
In recent weeks, four board members resigned – Mathatha Tsedu, Krish Naidoo, deputy chairperson Khanyisile Kweyama and John Mattison –after the committee failed to fill four other vacant posts this year.
The four previous vacancies were created by the exit of Nomvuyiso Batyi, Rachel Kalidass, Febe Potgieter-Gqubule and Victor Rambau.
Zambian opposition says it’s time to impeach Lungu
Douglas Syakalima, a member of Zambia’s opposition United Party for National Development says now is the time to impeach Zambian President Edgar Lungu.
Syakalima called for the president’s impeachment on the grounds of a motion that was submitted earlier in the year based on what the opposition said was Lungu’s threats to judges of the Constitutional Court.
Undeterred by a halt to parliamentary proceedings Syakalima said when parliament resumed in the New Year it would be time to remove Lungu for good.
