Maimane still believes in coalitions as partnership with EFF crumbles

Despite the disputed removal of the DA-led government in Nelson Mandela Bay and doom looming over the DA-led government in Tshwane, the party's leader Mmusi Maimane is not giving up on coalitions.

He gave a press briefing yesterday following Monday's drama in the Nelson Mandela Bay council where the ANC, with the support of the EFF, unseated Athol Trollip as Nelson Mandela Bay mayor.

Maimane said one-party dominance would lead to State capture.

EFF leader Julius Malema said Tshwane Mayor Solly Msimanga would suffer a similar fate as Trollip when a motion of no confidence against him is heard in Tshwane tomorrow.

ANC withdraws land expropriation bill passed in 2016

The ANC said yesterday an expropriation bill passed by parliament in 2016 enabling the State to make compulsory purchases of land to redress racial disparities in land ownership has been withdrawn.

The bill -- which had not been signed into law -- was withdrawn to allow an ongoing process that could lead to the changing of the constitution to pave way for expropriation of land without compensation, the party said.

The ANC deputy secretary general Jessie Duarte has rejected claims by the party's former MP Vytjie Mentor that the two discussed an offer by the Guptas to Mentor for a ministerial post in exchange for business concessions.

Duarte disputes meeting Mentor over Gupta Cabinet post offer

Mentor told the commission of inquiry into State capture that she informed Gwede Mantashe and Duarte that Ajay Gupta had offered her the job of public enterprises minister if she in turn would drop the SAA Johannesburg to Mumbai route so a Gupta-linked company, Jet Airways, could benefit.

Mentor told the commission that she reported the matter to both Mantashe and Duarte in 2010 in their capacities as secretary general and deputy secretary general, respectively.

Duarte told a news agency that she never discussed any matter with Mentor other than her complaint about a leg injury [that] she sustained at Parliament.
