Civil rights organisation AfriForum on Tuesday announced that it plans to make verbal presentations to Parliament against the expropriation of land without compensation and added that it will intensify its international campaign.
The African National Congress (ANC) said on Monday that it would "test the argument" that land redistribution without compensation is permitted under current laws, which would avoid it having to try to change the Constitution.
ANC National Executive Committee member Ronald Lamola confirmed that the ANC not only intends to expropriate rural land, but urban land as well.
The civil rights movement said it will intensify its campaign against expropriation without compensation within South Africa and abroad, adding that it will meet with the four investment envoys that President Cyril Ramaphosa recently appointed with the aim of attracting foreign investors.
AfriForum was also spearheading a petition in this regard and protest action was presently under consideration.
AfriForum will undertake liaison tours to Europe and Australia and a follow-up tour to the US will also be organised.
AfriForum deputy CEO Ernst Roets said that property rights were the cornerstones of economic development and claimed that the ANC’s acceleration of expropriation was an acceleration of economic deterioration.
